Annihilation: Conquest Crossover Reading Order
The second of Marvel’s big cosmic events, not quite as good as its predecessor, but still pretty damned good.

- The last previous appearance of a pivotal character in the storyline.
- These three issues of Nova parallel the action of the Prologue, taking place over a very brief span and end just as the conclusion of the Prologue play out.

World War Hulk Crossover Reading Order
Sending the Hulk off into space was never going to end well. But I think everyone was surprised at just how badly it went for the heroes of Earth…

- Not actually bannered as a part of the Aftersmash, but spins out of it just the same. Also, one of the most enjoyable comics in Marvel history.
- The title was renamed to Incredible Hercules with this issue. Seriously, dude, you should read all of it. Every volume.
- The relaunch of the Hulk, and a radical new direction.
Spider-Man: Back In Black Crossover Reading Order
This reading order lists every issue in which Spider-Man appeared in his black costume during 2007, but even by the standards of the rapacious Marvel marketing machine, this “event” is kinda pointless. It’s a five issue storyline in which Peter is utterly, utterly consumed by the fear of losing May, so much so that he is as humourless and driven as the Punisher…
…but not so much that he can’t still fight the Hulk’s armies, go to Japan with the Avengers, mourn Captain America, and even wisecrack like it was any other day in his non-Amazing titles.

Placement Notes:
- Bannered as a part of the Civil War storyline, but this issue leads directly into the event without any break.
- These issues comprise the actual Back in Black storyline. You could reasonably skip every single other issue listed on this page.

A tricky event to chronologise, given that most of it takes place in an alternate universe, and the vast majority of its tie-ins were more devoted to exploring that universe than actually propelling the story forward. Still, one Bendis’ better works.

- The Spider-Man mini-series seems to be inconsistent with the main story. Not that that means much in an alternate universe scenario like this.
- References in this story suggest that it takes place after both the Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk stories.

As far as I’m concerned, this one barely counts as a crossover. Almost none of the titles listed as part of it have any real connection to it (aside from some token issues of Iron Man and Captain America). But it’s undeniably an important event in the history of the Marvel Universe.
